Intel buys Infineon for $1.4B
August 31st, 2010Intel announced it will acquire Infineon Technologies’ wireless division for $1.4 billion.
The acquisition, rumored for several weeks, is expected to help the computer chip giant compete in the smartphone market and make a run for the lead in the LTE baseband market. Intel is keen on getting chips into mobile devices as they outpace traditional CPUs that go into PCs. So far, Intel’s low-power Atom chips have struggled to make their way into smartphones. Now it should have the resources to take on dominant player Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) in the LTE baseband market.
Infineon’s Wireless Solutions division makes 3G chips and baseband processors that are used in Apple’s iPhone and the iPad, and Samsung’s Galaxy S.

Intel to embrace LTE
August 31st, 2010WiMAX evangelist Intel has indicated it will embrace LTE when the technology becomes a widely available standard.
“There is no debate between WiMAX and LTE adoption. It is the decision that has to be taken by service providers and business, decisions are not taken on the basis of technology. We will take up LTE when it becomes a standard,” Intel South Asia Managing Director R Sivakumar said.
It’s still unclear what technology India’s newly licensed wireless broadband players will choose. Reliance Industries, India’s industrial conglomerate that snatched up startup ISP Infotel Broadband Services after it won the lone nationwide BWA license for $2.74 billion, initially indicated it would deploy TD-LTE in the 2.3 GHz but recent reports indicate it may deploy WiMAX in the interim.
But it is clear that the world’s major service providers have chosen LTE. The Global mobile Suppliers Association said that 101 firm LTE network deployments are planned or in progress in 41 countries.

Report: Android phone owners heavy WiFi users
August 31st, 2010A new report from global WiFi connection service company WeFi indicates Android phone owners have become heavy users of WiFi.
The company’s latest quarterly report gleans information from WeFi’s more than 5 million end users logging on via various platforms through WeFi’s database of more than 60 million access points. However, the report doesn’t include WiFi usage by iPhone users because Apple bans WiFi scanning applications.
WeFi found that many Android phones during the second quarter its examined used more than 500 MB per month, with the HTC Hero and HTC Tatoo recording WiFi usage in the 500 MB to 2 GB range. “Most notably all the Android models have significantly increased monthly WiFi data usage beyond the 500 MB range,” the report said.
The report concludes that the rapid increase in Android applications, especially in data intensive ones, is prompting users to spend more time online. Moreover, WiFi hotspots are now free in places like McDonald’s and Starbucks.
